Anger

What Is It?

If you're struggling with anger, you may have been met with judgment or shame. But rarely do people ask why the anger is there in the first place.

Anger is often seen as the problem, but more often, it’s a response to one. Like anxiety, it’s part of the body’s natural threat response. When the root cause isn’t resolved, anger can build up and become overwhelming or misdirected. That’s when it can leak out as impatience, rage, silence, sarcasm, or withdrawal, and start to affect relationships, work, and overall wellbeing. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone; beneath anger there are often difficult experiences or unmet needs that go unseen.

What Can Cause It?

Issues surrounding anger often have a background story, one that isn't just about the here and now, but about what’s been building underneath for a long time.

What’s often behind it:

  • A strong sense of injustice- people who feel anger deeply often care deeply, especially about fairness, integrity, and respect.

  • Repeated boundary violations- not just one-off incidents, but a pattern of being dismissed, disrespected, or controlled.

  • Being harmed by people or systems- whether it’s betrayal, abuse, discrimination, or being let down by institutions that were meant to help- the result is often anger with nowhere to go.

  • Feeling powerless or unheard- when your voice has been silenced or ignored, anger can become the only way to be noticed.

  • Unmet emotional needs- like safety, love, stability, or freedom, especially when these have been denied over and over again.

  • Chronic stress or trauma- when your nervous system is in constant fight-or-flight, anger can become a default survival response.

  • Cultural and social expectations- gender roles, racism, classism, or stigma often shape how anger is expressed, supressed or judged, and whether support is even offered.
